Roque Sevilla is a successful businessman and entrepreneur in Ecuador. He is described as an economist, businessman, and amateur architect. Sevilla started and operated several insurance companies in Ecuador. Many of those companies were the largest insurance companies in the country.
Sevilla owns a hotel in Quito called the Mashpi Lodge, which is located in an Andean cloud forest. He is also president of Metropolitan Touring, the largest travel company in Ecuador.
Sevilla is skilled and educated in public administration and politics. Sevilla studied at Harvard and received a graduate degree in public administration. He once served as mayor of Quito and is a contributor to the World Wildlife Fund.
Sevilla has worked tirelessly on projects focused on the public good, but particularly has focused on environmental preservation. When he learned about the negative impact of deforestation on his favorite animals, he bought 3,200 acres of land to preserve. Sevilla worked behind the scenes to get the Mashpi Lodge Project off the ground (as both the visionary and a major investor). The project began in 2001 with the goal of conserving a specific area of forest on the Pacific slope of the Andes mountains. This particular area is considered widely biodiverse and was damaged from over logging.
After visiting Sevilla, a New York Times journalist recalled that when driving together through the mountains of Ecuador, Sevilla “ecites the names of tree species, describes different hummingbirds and tells stories about the foundations of Ecuador’s conservation movement.” The reserve that Sevilla owns is located in the Choco “bio-region”. International conservation rankings put it as one of the most bio-diverse areas on the planet.
